Sleep At Last

I forgot to mention in the last post that Maya is now sleeping through the night...at least most of the time. She went 5 days straight before needing a feeding on Monday and Wednesday. Of course, both of these were nights where I was in charge of waking up with her. I'd like to think she just wanted to cuddle with Daddy. Anyway, here are a couple cute pics from this week.

Climbing the Mountain

Here's Maya's latest. I'm guessing we shouldn't be encouraging these kind of things?? But, it's fun to see her learn how to do new things.

Father's Day was great. Lezlie cooked me my favorite breakfast (bacon and eggs) in the morning. And ah...the gift. It may sound weird but I've been wanting a deep fryer for quite awhile. But, we always thought we would misuse it and each die young. But, we've vowed to keep it's use to a minimum. I plan on making some hot wings this weekend. Anyway, we went to church, Maya sung her usual tune, and then came home and each spent some time in the baby pool. After playing in the pool, we all took a nap. I think this was the biggest treat of all. Then, we made way to Dairy Queen to finish out my first Father's Day.

Back to Maya...she is growing up real fast. I don't have anyone to compare her to but I don't think it will be long before she's walking. She continues to crawl over everything. I don't think she has figured out how to go around obstacles. Then, the whole stair thing...I guess we'll have to keep an eye on that. She can walk along the couch too. And, she continues to get into stuff she's not supposed to--Daddy's computer, dog food, dog hair, dog food, and more dog food. Who knows how much of the stuff she's already eaten? Come on, you can't keep your eye on her every second. At first, we started to say "no" to her a lot but a girl Lezlie works with who does "Parents as Teachers" says that she it too young to understand "no." And, if you overuse it at a young age, she won't understand it when it's serious (i.e. running out into the street). So, we continue to just pull her away. She tends to get a real kick out of that, just going right back to what we took her away from--with a "you can't catch me" smile of course.

First Trip to the Zoo

This Saturday, we decided at a whim to go to the St. Louis Zoo. It was quite an interesting trip. Upon first entering, we went to the primate house. I remember when we first brought Jocelyn there. Josie almost freaked out but once she figured out there was glass between the monkeys and her, she thought it was alright. Maya kept a close eye on them but that was about it. To her, they were just a bunch of hairy Vinnies that could jump from tree to tree.

After the primate house, we went around to see the lions, zebras, and donkeys (or as they called them, wild asses). At the edge of the zoo were the giraffes. This is where things got interesting. When I first came around the corner, my first thought was "What the hell is hanging from its butt?" It took me a bit but I soon figured out (with Lezlie's help--the zoologist of the family) that the giraffe was giving birth. What was weird was that all the mother was doing was walking around.
It didn't look like it was going to happen soon so we walked around for a bit longer but soon came back to see the progress. We then heard one of the zookeepers say that it would probably be about 30 minutes based on the actions of the mother. So, we decided to wait and watch. She continued to pace and every so often, she would stop, lower her head a bit, and push. After a bit, out came the head. Around 20 minutes later, out the baby came. I almost got it on video but it happened so quick and I missed it. But, here is a picture soon after. We didn't see the baby get up but she was moving and reacting to her mother cleaning her.

Maya was patient through all of this, but we could tell she was getting sleepy so we decided to make way down to the bears and the penguins/puffins.At the end of the day, I think we wore her out. She took an hour and a half nap. Unfortunately, this kept her up until 11pm. But hey, it's the weekend.

Stay tuned--I'll soon let you know how my first Father's Day went.

First Vacation

Last Friday, we all went to Gatlinburg, TN to stay in a cabin in the Smoky Mountains with my parents and my brother's family. Click here to see our cabin. I would definitely recommend the place. Our cabin was a 4 bedroom/4 bath cabin that had 3 decks, a hot tub, pool table, air hockey, Pac-Man and Golden Tee.

On Friday, we left as soon as Maya fell asleep and went about half-way to Clarksville, TN. We made one stop in Metropolis, IL so Lezlie could do her Supergirl pose. For those of you who don't know, Metropolis is the home of Superman. Anyway, Maya slept the whole way. Upon getting there around 11:30, we played for a little bit, but then fed her and she quickly went back to sleep. On Saturday, off to the smokies we went.

The first day we got groceries, ate, and then went to play miniature golf per Jocelyn's (my niece) direction. Lezlie got one hole-in-one but I still whooped her butt. After that, we all had a craving for ice cream so we went down to the strip and filled our face with sundaes.

The next day we went out to the mountains to picnic and look for bears. Unfortunately, there were no sitings. Actually, on one of our hikes a guy made the comment that he thought Vinnie was a bear as he came around a corner.

As you can see, the Smokies are very scenic. I've always told Lezlie that when we retire we'll have to buy a cabin there. But, we definitely won't buy the one we stayed in. A few around us were for sale and we asked the front desk what they go for. The lady said that the 1 bedrooms start at $490,000. So, I'm guessing a 3 bedroom goes for almost a cool million. I guess I'll have to find somewhere else to retire. Either that or buy 0.05 acres and build a shack...

During the evenings, we spent most of our time in the game room playing pool, air hockey, and video games. I was quite funny watching Olivia playing Ms. Pac Man/Frogger. Every time Ms. Pac Man got caught by a ghost or Frogger was ran over by a truck, she made an evil laugh:) You better watch out, Jason and Susan. Lezlie challenged me to a game of air hockey and was up 9-5 but I came back to win 10-9. Jocelyn was amazed at how hard we were hitting the puck as it flew off about every 10 seconds. Let's just say we play for blood.

In the midst of all the coming and going, Maya was passed around a lot. And, she did her share of scooting across the floor. It's funny--as soon as she transitions from carpet to hardwood, her technique changes drastically. It's as if she loses feeling in one of her legs because she drags one while she steps with the other one. In addition to crawling, she got a lot of attention from Josie and Olivia. She definitely loves her cousins.

Maya did have a bad cough through the whole vacation but was still able to have fun during the day. The nights--not so much. She continued to hack up stuff and her pack-n-play wasn't cutting it as a comfortable bed. So, she cuddled between us in bed. Since returning, I have taken her to the doctor and she was diagnosed with a sinus infection and given...can you guess???...antibiotics. I'm beginning to wonder if they sell the stuff in 5 gallon buckets. At least it wasn't an ear infection.

On Monday, we went to the Ripley's Aquarium. It was very satisfying to see Maya soak in everything. As you can see, she was amazed by the bright tropical fish. Most people would think that we're crazy to drive over 500 miles with an 8 month old but this definitely showed us that she needs vacations too.

On Tuesday, we went on another hike and then did a little shopping. I know, I know, we can shop anywhere but it seems like the money was burning a hole in our pocket since Mom and Dad paid for the cabin. Thanks again, Mom and Dad. That being said, we didn't buy much and if we did it was for Vinnie or Maya. Late Tuesday afternoon, we gave Maya a bath, fed her and then headed back home since Lezlie had to work on Wednesday. We made it half-way before Maya woke up. So, we stopped and played with her for awhile and then went back on the road where she slept until St. Louis at 2am. Then, amazingly she ate and then slept until morning. In total, if you count day care, she slept 17 hours in a 24 hour period. She definitely was tuckered out.

Anyway, that was our trip in a nutshell.
